Why I Built My Own Fitness App
Split Workout Tracking
For the past year, I tracked my workouts using my phone’s Notes app.
Not because it was a great solution, but because every fitness app I tried got in the way of actually working out.
They all shared the same problems:
- Forced sign-ins: I don’t want to create an account just to log a workout.
- Feature bloat: I’m not looking for a social network—I just want to track my sets.
- Internet dependency: If the gym’s Wi-Fi is down, the app should still work.
What I wanted was simple: a fast, offline-first logger for a PPL (Push / Pull / Legs) routine.
So I built Split.
Design Principles
From the start, I focused on three core principles:
-
Speed
No login, no clutter. Open the app and start lifting. -
Flexibility
Create custom splits, reorder exercises instantly, and adapt your routine on the fly. -
Data Ownership
Your data stays on your device. Export workouts to CSV/Excel or share routines via JSON—no lock-in.
Split started as a tool I built for myself. I needed something that stayed out of the way and let me focus on training, not tapping through screens.
If it helps others do the same, that’s a win.
